Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cost of a session?
Pricing: All services are priced at $60 for a one-hour session, unless otherwise noted (see Group Sign Language and Seminars).
Session Duration: Sessions are a minimum of one hour per visit. Any additional time beyond the hour will be charged in quarter-hour increments. Clients have the flexibility to mix and match areas of focus within the hour session.
Invoicing and Payment: Clients receive an invoice at the end of each week, and payment via credit card through STR's secure app is due upon receipt. Processing fees may apply and a fee of $5 may be charged if a payment is 7 days past due.
How often are sessions scheduled?
The flexibility STR offers in designing the session schedule allows parents to choose a schedule that best fits their specific needs and goals. Here are some examples of schedules:
Annual Review (1-4 hours a year): periodic review of the child's progress, IEPs, and assessments
Behavior and Social-Emotional Development (1 hour a week or 2 hours a month): focus on social-emotional development and behavior such as focus, study habits, anxiety management, etc.
General Tutoring (1 hour a week): focus on completing and checking school work and remediating specific skills or reinforcing new skills
Intensive Reading & Writing Sessions (2-3 hours a week): tailored for students who need concentrated support in reading and writing, such as those with dyslexia or significant challenges in these areas.
Comprehensive Multi-Subject Sessions (5-10 hours a week): students who require a well-rounded education, this intensive schedule covers multiple subjects, including math, reading, writing, and additional homeschool subjects like science and history. This model is suited for parents who wish to provide a thorough and structured homeschooling experience.

Consistent Tutoring: Students receive one-on-one tutoring with an experienced and certified teacher who is knowledgeable about general education and special needs.
Individualized Lessons: Lessons are tailored to meet the specific needs and goals of each student and their family. This approach ensures that the student's unique learning requirements are addressed.
Flexible Learning Options: STR offers flexibility in terms of where tutoring takes place. Students can receive lessons at home, online, or in a public location.
Multi-Subject Sessions: The option to have multi-subject sessions, such as splitting an hour between different subjects, allows for a well-rounded educational experience.
No Long-Term Commitments: Parents are not tied into long-term contracts, and they have the freedom to start or stop the tutoring service as needed.
No Registration or Material Fees: STR provides a transparent fee structure, which includes no additional registration or material fees.
Family-Focused Approach: STR's tutoring service focuses on interventions and remediations that support holistic child development and recognize that a child's education is a collaborative effort between the family and the tutor.
Specialized Support: STR offers expertise in Orton Gillingham Reading remediation for dyslexic and struggling readers, certified Special Education teachers, and vetted intervention strategies.
Parent Support: STR service extends support to parents, offering guidance and assistance with curriculum, planning, behavior, assessments, and interactions with public schools. This can be especially valuable for families who homeschool or for children with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), 504 plans, or other special needs services.
What do parents need to supply?
Workspace: Parents are responsible for designating a suitable workspace in their home for tutoring sessions. If parents opt for virtual/online learning, they need to ensure the student has access to a working computer and a reliable internet connection.
Specialized Equipment: Parents are responsible for providing any specialized equipment their child may need, such as a writing table for a wheelchair user, communication devices, hearing aids, and related supplies.
A Specialized Tutoring Resource Tutor will supply paper, writing supplies, curriculum, and materials. Parents can also choose to provide their own curriculum and materials for the tutor to use.
What curriculum is used?
STR can assess and select curriculum or materials based on the individual needs of each child.
Assessment & Consultation: STR can conduct informal assessments of each child to determine their strengths, weaknesses, and unique learning requirements. Additionally, STR will consult with parents to collaboratively decide on the most appropriate curriculum or materials based on the student's needs.
General Education Path: For students who are following a general education path and are able to keep up with standard curriculum, parents have the flexibility to provide their own curriculum and materials or use those provided by STR.
Special Needs Interventions: Students with special needs, who may face challenges such as splinter skills, retention difficulties, dyslexia, or other learning differences, can benefit from specialized interventions such as:
Orton Gillingham: This evidence-based approach, based on Scottish Rite Dyslexia remediation, is particularly effective for students with dyslexia.
Handwriting Without Tears: A program designed to improve handwriting skills.
Multi-Sensory and Association Techniques: Methods that engage multiple senses and promote association to enhance learning.
Individualized Techniques: Customized strategies and approaches tailored to each student's unique needs.
Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS): Techniques that foster positive behavior and social skills.
What if parents need to cancel a session?
Cancellation Policy:
Notification: If a session needs to be canceled, parents and tutors should notify the other with at least 8 hours notice. A No-Show or Lack of Sufficient Communication will result in a $5.00 charge on the invoice.
Emergencies and Unexpected Events: Recognizing that emergencies and unexpected events can happen (such as illnesses or family issues), STR's policy allows for services to be placed on hold until these issues are resolved.
